Overview
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in collaboration with the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI), is organizing the first edition of the Winter School on Environmental Crimes, which will take place at SIOI headquarters in Rome, from 14 to 18 December, 2015.
The Winter School will promote participants foundational understanding of what environmental crimes are and in parallel will improve their knowledge on how law enforcement bodies and judicial systems are responding. The existing international legal framework will be examined with a view to improve the participants’ ability to address the issue in a comprehensive way and promote their role as advocates for an effective change in public policies, strategies and practices.
The lectures and activities offered by the Winter School will focus on:
- Environment and geopolitics
- The concept of environmental protection and its evolution
- Existing international legal frameworks to prevent crimes against the environment
- Links between environmental crimes and human rights violations
- Involvement of organized criminal groups in environmental crimes, with a specific focus on trafficking of natural resources
- Emerging trends in environmental crimes
- Waste trafficking and its impact on human health and security
- Challenges in investigating environmental crimes
- Environmental conflicts and justice
- Individual, corporate and State accountability for environmental crimes
The faculty is composed by high level scholars and academics from leading universities and research institutes as well as representatives of the United Nations System and other international organizations.
Participants will have the opportunity to interact with internationally recognised experts, meet peers and build lasting professional relationships with young professionals and students from all over the world. This intense experience fosters intercultural dialogue and a deeper understanding of one of the most serious emerging crime at global level
Entry requirements
The course is designed for university graduates in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Social Science or other relevant disciplines, and for young professionals working in governmental institutions, local authorities, international organizations, NGOs or the private sector seeking to deepen their understanding of environmental crimes.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
• Hold at least a three-year university degree issued by an internationally recognized university in one of the aforementioned areas.
• Have a very good working knowledge of English.
Applications from students who expect to graduate at the end of the 2015/2016 academic year will also be considered.

• Application deadline: please complete and send the application form, which can be downloaded here, to tae@unicri.it and formint@sioi.org by 2 December 2015.
• Confirmation of acceptance: the results of the selection process will be communicated via E-mail, by 4 December 2015.
• Payment deadline: full payment has to be finalized, upon confirmation of acceptance, by 8 December 2015 (i.e. candidates should provide UNICRI and SIOI with proof of payment via E-mail to tae@unicri.it and formint@sioi.org by the same date).
Early Bird applicants
A discounted rate (*) will be offered to Early Bird applicants. In order to receive the discount, applications must be submitted by 28 October 2015, and payment finalized, upon confirmation of acceptance, by 6 November 2015 (i.e. candidates should provide UNICRI and SIOI with proof of payment via E-mail to tae@unicri.it and formint@sioi.org by the same date).
For Early Bird applicants, the fee – to be paid by by 6 November 2015– will amount to € 850.
Applicants requiring VISA (IMPORTANT)
Those applicants requiring VISA and needing the Winter School Administrative Office assistance in facilitating its release are kindly requested to submit an early application and to notify the Winter School Office on this need.
In this case, the application shall be submitted by 28 October 2015, and the full payment has to be finalized, upon confirmation of acceptance, by 6 November 2015 (i.e. candidates should provide UNICRI with proof of payment via E-mail to tae@unicri.it and formint@sioi.org by the same date). Before applying, please consider that it usually takes at least 30 days to receive a VISA from Italian Embassies and Consulates. However, we recommend applicants to directly consult with the Italian Diplomatic Offices to have information on the exact time needed to finalize the VISA process.
Applicants requiring VISA and submitting their application by 28 October 2015 are also entitled to receive a discount (*) on the Summer School fee. In this case, the fee will amount to €850.
Fees
• General registration fees: € 920.
• Registration fees for Early Bird applicants(*): € 850.
Registration fees do not include additional expenses such as those related to travel, meals, accommodation, and VISA.
